Is There Anything Wrong With Tarot Card Reading?

August 19, 2016

tarot card reader illuminated sign    I got an e-mail today from a professional Tarot Card reader who took exception to a personal article from a friend I published on this web page  http://www.newchristian.org.uk/tinastory.html

He said:” I am a  professional Tarot Reader and Life guide , and I do not  recognise any of the problems that you seem to indicate that go with the trade and the art ? – please could you refrain from non-informed talk about other people’s beliefs. That is why there is so much trouble in the world. There is room for all beliefs. Peace”.

As requests go, it was indeed very courteous. I shall reply accordingly. There is indeed room for all beliefs. Having beliefs in your heart harms no-one, except possibly yourself, but that is of your own free will choice. But if, in practicing my beliefs, I influence others it may for good or ill. If the latter, I will have to account for practising deception upon others when I face God at the Judgment.

So, is there anything wrong with Tarot Card reading? According to Wikipedia, “divinatory meanings” have been associated with Tarot cards since 1783″. So what is divination? It is defined on Google as: “the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means”. Supernatural means may arise from kindly or evil forces. How can we know the origin of these forces?

From the Christian perspective, the Bible holds the key to what God approves or disapproves of: “When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the holy bibledetestable things of those nations.  There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead” (Bible, Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 18 verses 9 to 11).

Using divination puts one in the realm of deceptive spirits.  The Apostle Paul predicted: “But the (Holy) Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons ” (The Bible, Book of I Timothy 4: 1).

So if God does not approve of divination we must conclude it is harmful to man, since God seeks to encourage purity and righteousness in our lives.

The Bible, Psalm 24 verse 3 says:

“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.”

If the God of the Bible forbids divination by those he has made then we risk the wrath of God if we indulge in such a practice. The ultimate outworking of God’s wrath is exclusion from his presence and a resultant banishment to hell, where Satan and his followers end up in eternal torment and suffering. If you disobey God’s warnings you cannot expect him to welcome you into Heaven, where he lives.

You Can’t Keep Jesus Inside – He Just Overflows Out Of You

January 18, 2014

This morning we set up our banner, chairs and kneeler pads in town for a two hour session doing Healing On The Streets.   healing on the streets logo

busker on the street playing guitar     I noticed a busker with long hair playing pretty fancy guitar stuff nearby. When he took a break I wandered over to chat with him. I complimented him on his playing; he said he’d been doing it some 30 years. I showed him our leaflet that explains what we do. He told me he had back pain and shoulder pain. I told him about the guy I laid hands on yesterday and how his pain had gone. I pointed to our chairs and invited him to sit and be prayed for. He said OK, packed up his music gear and collecting sheet with his money and joined me. I invited a lady team member to join us.

We laid hands on him and brought him to Jesus. I asked how he was feeling now and he said: “I feel really good!” His back and shoulder felt much improved. I suggested he stand up and give it a workout. He said: “I’d better not; I think I might fall over if I did!” The lady with me gave him a few words from the Lord that he could relate to. He took my website card and a Mark’s Gospel I had in my back pocket.

Thank you Lord that you’re always ready, willing and able!

“I’d Love To Have a New Testament!”

January 3, 2014

Gideon New Testament with Psalms   A very agitated guy came in with his pal for food today.  I thought he might be withdrawing from drugs. In the course of a general chat he said to me ” I’m a friend”. I looked at him in a puzzled way and he clarified: “a Friend – a Quaker”. We chatted about this and he said he was “looking for the light”. I said “you mean God” and he replied “I don’t know if there is a God”. He went on to tell me he’d done around 7 years total in prison. He’d just come out on Christmas Eve from his last stint of 6 weeks. In the past he used to take cars, but now he does shoplifting mostly.

He then told me he was a Roman Catholic and had been confirmed in the last year. In prison he’d enjoyed reading the lesson in chapel.  I asked if he went to confession. He said he didn’t, as he’d have to confess his sins. I told him that might do him good, but he wasn’t convinced. As he got up to leave I said: “would you like a New Testament?” He said, to my surprise, “I’d love a New Testament!” So off he went with his New Testament. I pray he reads it and gets convicted by the Holy Spirit of his need for forgiveness.

Nowadays you don’t need to subscribe to traditional Christian beliefs to be a Quaker. Things have changed.

Sharing The Gospel Again

November 11, 2013

one man praying for another   Chatted with a guy who was thrown out by his mother at age 15. He’s now around 30, and by his own admission he has “done some bad stuff”. I sensed he wanted to change, so I shared the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis and what it means for us. After sharing different aspects of the gospel, I offered to pray for him. He agreed, so I put my arm round him and prayed. Afterwards he looked puzzled and I could see something had happened.  I asked him what was up. He said “what’s that I’m feeling ?”  I said: “that’s the presence of God confirming that what I’ve told you is true”.  He was quite taken aback!

I told him about a true story on video I watched last night about a career criminal called Davey Falcus. His father was a bank robber and Davey started carrying a gun at 17. He eventually controlled a drugs and club empire in North East England. One day when it all got too much, he got on his knees and met with Jesus and his life turned completely around.  My friend said he’d like to see the video, so I’m arranging that. In the meantime I gave him a tract to take away: “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction”.

This is the video:
